In terms of nutritional health, the world has sunk to its worst level. People are becoming fatter and exposing themselves to chronic diseases. Demanding work schedules, cable television, video games, the internet and smartphones are some of the factors that have reduced the activeness of today’s world. Definitely, something needs to be done.
Personally, I have not been able to escape the disastrous effects of spending endless hours watching television and chatting on my phone. On top of that, I developed a craving for sugary and junk food, making the situation worse. Within a few month, I could feel the general flexibility of my body reducing. Walking around my neighborhood was slowly becoming a little of a bargain for me; something that I could do effortlessly in the past. This rung alarm bells in my head and immediately aroused a desire to live in a healthy fashion.
Nevertheless, the reality of how important it was for me to watch what I eat did not hit me so hard until I moved to America. Here, I was completely independent in choosing what I ate. Unlike at my home where a great percentage of my meals were made by my mum, which was mostly healthy food, in America, I found myself depending on fast foods from restaurants.
The relatively heavy demand by my classwork left me very little time to cook healthy foods. Innumerable people in the US suffer the same problem. With work schedules extending up to 12 hours a day, cooking healthy foods is almost impossible.
However, with my initial desire to eat healthy food, I pushed myself hard to try out a healthy nutritional plan. On the first day, I made veggie burgers, which was an easy recipe with a great nutritional value. It contained carrots, potatoes, onions and eggs. This meal, coupled with a number of snacks to make up 3 meals for the day, I realized I had consumed 1,180 calories. That is, 350g of carbs, 50g of fat, 100g of protein, 1,900mg sodium, 50g sugar and 24g of fibre.
On the second day, although, I relented and ate fast food, I managed to make a recipe containing chicken, vegetables and rice. At the end of the day, I had consumed a total of 1,100 calories. 162g of carbs, 63g of protein, 23g of fat, 1,600 mg of sodium, 78g of sugars, and 16g of fiber made this.
On the third day, which was I consumed 4 meals, two in small quantities and two in large quantities. The two small meals were snacks which were averagely 70 calories, 2g of carbs, 0g of fat, 15 g of protein, 98 mg cholesterol, 164 mg of sodium, 0 g fiber and 0 g sugar. Totally, on the third day I consumed about 430 calories. That is 60 g of carbs, 6 g of fat, 627 mg of sodium, 42g of protein, 105mg of cholesterol, 15 g of sugar and 9 g of fiber.
After tremendously trying to disciplined on what I ate, I still managed to cook on the fourth day hence consuming a total of 1,100 calories, 150g of carbs, 10g of fat, 60 of proteins, 20 mg of cholesterol, 800 mg sodium, 15 g sugar and 6g fiber.
I am planning to develop a solid healthy eating habit for a better life.
