What is the STATED role of the tactical officer in modern policing
a) What is the STATED role of the tactical officer in modern policing? (I.e., what was the PURPOSE behind creating tactical response units?) In what ways are military tactics influencing modern policing?
b) Are military-influenced tactics ACTUALLY used in policing today (notice the word, INFLUENCED)? To respond to this question, you’ll want to look for information about how military-influenced tactics are used in actual cases. There are several ways to make this. The first is to search for news stories that you can use as DATA. If you choose this route, please look for cases that disconfirm, as well as confirm, your personal assumptions. The second is to search for academic and/or government data on their use. You might consider the frequency of use, the contexts/justifications for use, level of success, etc..
c) Some criminal justice scholars have written extensively about the militarization of police . What does that term refer to? What are the potential problems and/or opportunities of police militarization? Are tactical units, such as SWAT, and/or their use examples of “militarization”?
